Community members from across the Palouse are invited to celebrate Juneteenth with a day of sharing and community-building on Thursday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Friendship Square in Downtown Moscow. Free soul food, music and the spoken word, a drum circle, pottery provided in partnership with Terracotta, and other family-friendly activities will be available for all to enjoy. Washington State University’s Carrie Bullock Ben-Yisrael will deliver the keynote. Ben-Yisrael is a dynamic educator, advocate, and truth-teller whose life and work are deeply rooted in the pursuit of justice, equity, and generational healing. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. A federal holiday since 2021, it marks the date on which enslaved people in Texas received word of emancipation, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Sponsors for Juneteenth events include Palouse EDJE, the Moscow Human Rights Commission, the Latah County Human Rights Task Force, the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse, Washington State University Multicultural Student Services and African American Student Center, University of Idaho Black Studies, and Terracotta.
