Title – Pullman Chamber of Commerce Executive Director

Purpose – The Pullman Chamber of Commerce connects and supports local businesses, community members and visitors. Our Executive Director makes this possible by setting a vision with the Board of Directors and working with the Chamber staff to execute events, communication and policy advocacy. The Executive Director reports to the Pullman Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Core Responsibilities

  • Member Relations and Business Development (30%)

o Development and retention of current and future membership prospects.

o Support members and potential members through advocacy, strong relationships, programs, government affairs support and membership services.

o Promote the benefits of Chamber membership through events, public speaking opportunities, marketing and advertising.

o Analyze and interpret the needs of members and make recommendations to increase membership value, engagement and financial support.

o Keep consistent, strong lines of communication open between all parties, by encouraging member input and feedback, visiting members, and keeping up with community organizations.

o Build strategic partnerships with other regional businesses, nonprofit and government organizations.

o Establish community, business, university and government relationships focused on bringing new businesses to Pullman and making the town a great place to work, live and do business.

o Advocate for laws, ordinances, and legislative strategies that benefit business and support economic development in Pullman.

o Act as a liaison between the board of directors, chamber members, and the community.

  • Organizational Management (25%)

o Create and maintain a positive, supportive work environment that empowers staff while overseeing the Chamber’s daily operations, programs, membership services, and marketing efforts.

o Anticipate emerging and long-term planning needs of the Chamber.

o In conjunction with the Board, devise and implement a strategic plan and annual program of work to advance the Chamber’s mission, this includes: event goals and dates, membership targets, an overall communications plan (website, social media, weekly newsletter, and annual events calendar), and an annual budget. The director should utilize bylaws, precedence and evaluations as planning and implementation tools.

o Build and maintain strong relationships and communications with the Board of Directors. Provide necessary leadership to garner full engagement of board members.

o Plan and organize committee and board meetings, and coordinate plans and agenda for these meetings.

o Ensure proper record keeping, compliance, governance and related communication.

  • Personnel Management (25%)

o Oversee the management of chamber staff including hiring, firing, performance reviews, salary and benefits administration, policy and general supervision.

o Coach and develop the internal leadership team to attain consistent, highly effective performance.

o Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives, create better business practices and an organizational structure that will optimize performance and operating results. Create an internal management system of key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor staff activity and performance against goals with continued supervision.

o Promote a working environment of excellence, external and internal collaboration and professional standards for the organization. Build accountability into the culture.

  • Tourism and Community Events (15%)

o Lead and support a variety of events that support economic development and tourism in the region.

o Represent the Chamber at regional and local tourism activities and lead the development and distribution of related literature.

o Be a visible, enthusiastic advocate for local tourism.

  • Other duties as assigned (5%)

Required Qualifications –

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.
  • Working knowledge of local, regional and state-level political systems and experience in developing collaborative relationships in these areas.
  • Proven ability to work with a wide variety of people, including employees and the public.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality, poise, and good humor.
  • Willingness to delegate and work collaboratively.
  • Salary range $80,000-$87,000.

Preferred Qualifications –

  • Previous Chamber management experience.

Experience leading a nonprofit or tourism-focused organization.
